Woman going out with friends to celebrate her breakup is shot in the head by her ex-boyfriend

WASHINGTON, DC – A man was sentenced to five decades in prison on Tuesday for the 2021 murder of his ex-girlfriend, whom he shot just after she entered her friend’s car outside her home in Northwest Washington. The sentencing signifies a grave consequence for 37-year-old Idrissa Fall, whose actions ended Dara Northern’s life and shattered her close-knit community.

Judge Rainey Brandt handed down the 50-year federal prison sentence following Fall’s conviction earlier this year on charges of first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Upon completion of his prison term, Fall will also be under five years of supervised release. The severity of the sentence reflects the violent nature of the crime, and parole will not be an option for Fall.

This tragic event unfolded in the early hours of July 18, 2021, outside Northern’s home on the 6100 block of 4th Street, NW. Northern planned an evening out with her best friend but was tragically unaware that Fall, secretly lurking nearby, sought a deadly confrontation.

Northern’s best friend arrived at her home to start what should have been a celebratory night for Northern, who had recently ended her relationship with Fall and ousted him from her home. Instead, the evening turned disastrous when Fall appeared as Northern approached her friend’s vehicle.

Despite Fall’s attempts to stop her, Northern remained steadfast, entering the car. At this moment, as she closed the door, Fall drew a firearm and shot Northern, tragically ending her life within moments.

Emergency services rushed Northern to a local hospital where, despite efforts to save her, she was declared brain-dead and succumbed to her injuries later that day. The brutality of the crime left a deep scar on those who knew her, particularly her best friend, who witnessed the shooting.

According to accounts from prosecutors, Northern had been particularly joyous and spirited following her breakup with Fall, looking forward to an evening of celebration. The unprovoked attack was further compounded by reported statements from Fall making derogatory comments about Northern’s presumed sexuality, inferring she might have been part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Prior to the shooting, authorities learned Fall had disabled the security cameras at Northern’s residence, possibly to evade detection. However, footage from nearby cameras captured Fall fleeing the scene. His evasion was short-lived; investigators arrested him two weeks later.

Though his sentence could have been life imprisonment, it emphasizes the gravity and premeditation surrounding Northern’s killing. Fall now faces a long period of reflection over his actions behind bars, a testament to the mournful end of a young woman’s vibrant life.
