ORLANDO, FL – A woman in Florida was apprehended on Memorial Day following an alleged altercation with a child on an aircraft at Orlando-Sanford International Airport. The 46-year-old, Kristy L. Crampton, now faces charges of child abuse without causing great bodily harm.
The confrontation reportedly began before the flight’s departure to Maryland after Crampton, the child, and several others were removed from the plane due to the disturbance, according to police records. Officers from Sanford Airport Police arrived at the scene and spoke with Crampton near the gate.
Crampton recounted to the officers that tensions had been brewing during their trip to Disney. The situation escalated on the plane when the child allegedly insulted her by calling her “fat” and referring to her as “Miss Piggy.” In reaction, Crampton said she confiscated the boy’s phone, which led to him becoming agitated.
As the boy reportedly attempted to push her arm off the armrest, Crampton allegedly responded by smacking him. Police documentation indicates that the child accused Crampton of smacking him after he objected to her occupation of the shared armrest.
Eyewitnesses on the flight provided corroborating accounts of the incident. One witness claimed to have seen Crampton strike the child both with her fist and a water bottle. Moreover, the witness described Crampton as forcefully pushing the child’s head against the airplane window.
Another passenger testified that the boy’s insults towards Crampton lasted for a couple of minutes and that the confrontation turned physical when Crampton replied with aggression after expressing her dislike for him.
Based on these testimonies, authorities concluded that Crampton’s actions exceeded appropriate discipline and involved repeated blows to the head, as well as the use of a water bottle.
In court on Tuesday, Crampton was granted a bond set at $10,000. Following her release on bond, she has been ordered to refrain from any contact with the victim.
The exact nature of the relationship between Crampton and the boy has not been disclosed by the authorities.
