SAN ANTONIO, TX – A tragic sequence of events unfolded in San Antonio, leaving one teenager dead and another in custody after an argument escalated into gun violence, according to authorities.
Two emergency calls were reported within a minute of each other on Wednesday night, signaling gunfire on the city’s west side, San Antonio police confirmed. Joel Castillo, 16, was pronounced dead following the incident, and his alleged assailant, a 14-year-old neighbor, has been charged with murder. His identity remains confidential due to his age.
The shooting occurred around 10:40 p.m. at an apartment complex near San Carlos and Agatha Streets. Investigators revealed that the two teens had a history of disputes, which culminated in a fatal confrontation when the younger boy provoked Castillo with a remark about his deceased mother. When the exchange turned physical, the younger boy reportedly fired multiple shots, fatally wounding Castillo before fleeing, police reported.
Jose Castillo, Joel’s father, shared the heart-wrenching final moments with his son. He recounted trying to intervene and protect Joel amidst the altercation. After being threatened by the shooter, he went to alert the young suspect’s mother but heard gunfire en route, rushing back to find his son gravely injured.
“He was in my arms,” Castillo’s father recalled, describing how his son called out “Dad” as his condition deteriorated. Despite efforts to save him, Joel Castillo died from gunshot wounds to the abdomen at a nearby hospital within hours.
The shooter initially evaded capture but was located the following morning after his mother provided a description to the police. The arrest marked a somber conclusion to a night of violence that has deeply affected both families involved.
Joel Castillo’s family has suffered a tremendous loss this year, having previously lost their mother, Sandra Martinez, in a tragic car accident. In an emotional statement, Joel’s brother expressed a profound sense of emptiness following this second family tragedy.
“This doesn’t happen in a vacuum,” a community member, reflecting on the incident, commented. “We need to address the underlying issues driving such violence among our youth.”
The San Antonio community is left grappling with the fallout of this incident, raising questions about how to prevent similar occurrences and support the affected families during such profound grief and loss.
