MOUNTAIN HOME, AR – A couple from Mountain Home, Arkansas, faces over 100 felony charges each amid allegations of imprisoning a 15-year-old boy, who is the woman’s son, in a harrowing case of abuse. Jaclyn Machelle Barnett, 41, and her husband, Daniel Alan Wright, 40, have been accused of locking the teenager in a bathroom without food for extended periods, using a ratchet strap to secure the door, with the only reprieve being school attendance.

Authorities arrested the pair on Wednesday, charging them with 112 counts of first-degree false imprisonment with the risk of injury, in addition to single counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and permitting child abuse.

The disturbing situation came to light when Mountain Home police were alerted to cries coming from an upstairs apartment on November 2, following a report by a concerned neighbor. Upon arrival, police communicated with the trapped boy through a bedroom window after being directed there by two other children, aged 10 and 11, who were present at the residence and claimed their parents were at work.

Investigators expressed concerns that the younger children were instructed by Barnett and Wright to deny any wrongdoing, suspecting they were coached to provide misleading information. However, evidence found at the scene contradicted these claims, revealing physical restraints on the bathroom door.

Lead investigator Mike Day reported that the boy was discovered naked and hungry after being released from the bathroom. He explained the abuse as a recurring pattern, wherein the boy was confined during nighttime and only permitted limited freedom to attend school during the day. The child allegedly slept on a hard wooden platform within the bathroom while his siblings rested in proper beds.

The couple initially denied knowledge of why the boy was imprisoned naked in the bathroom, suggesting that it resulted from games played by the other children. When this defense was disproven, they altered their narrative to claim the door was strapped shut to address a plumbing issue.

The decision to file 112 counts of false imprisonment corresponds to the documented days the teen attended school throughout 2024, referencing a timeline established in legal proceedings. Authorities stated that further charges might be imminent as the investigation unfolds, given the extent and duration of the mistreatment, which is compounded by previous reports dating back over a decade.

The case has fueled public outrage, underscoring lapses and perceived failures in protecting the boy and highlighting systemic issues in child welfare monitoring. Both Barnett and Wright were detained at Baxter County Jail on a $50,000 bond. As of the most recent update, Wright has been released on bond, whereas Barnett remains incarcerated.
