ELIZABETHTOWN, KY – Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old girl, Katen Atwell, after a late-night encounter in a store parking lot ended in tragedy. The incident, which occurred early Sunday morning, has left a community searching for answers and led to the arrest of another 15-year-old girl and a 21-year-old man.
Police responded shortly after 2:30 a.m. to a report of gunfire near a Lowe’s parking lot. When officers arrived, they found Bryan Harbison, 21, performing CPR on Atwell. Emergency responders transported Atwell to a local hospital, but she was pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Investigators determined that Harbison had met Atwell and her friend on Snapchat. According to police, he told authorities that the teenagers claimed to be 18 during their interactions. The three decided to meet in person, and Harbison agreed to supply them with alcohol before gathering in the parking lot to drink together.
Details of what happened inside the truck that night have varied, as provided by those present. The surviving teenager, who drove Harbison’s vehicle to the scene, told police that she accidentally fired the shot that killed Atwell. She admitted to picking up a gun from the center console, believing it was unloaded, and pointing it at Atwell before pulling the trigger.
Harbison offered a different account, telling detectives the weapon was secured in the glove compartment, and the teenager accessed it without his knowledge. Investigators have not said whether any evidence has been found to support either version of events.
Following interviews, the minor was taken into custody on a murder charge. Her identity is being withheld due to her age. Harbison faces charges of unlawful transaction with a minor and reckless endangerment. He remains at the Hardin County Detention Center under a $10,000 bond, with a court date set for January 21.
Police say the investigation remains active as they continue to gather evidence, including reviewing digital communications between the teens and Harbison.
Authorities urge parents to be vigilant about their children’s social media activity and the risks posed by online interactions. The case highlights ongoing concerns about youth safety, internet platforms, and access to firearms.
No additional suspects are being sought at this time, officials said.
As the investigation unfolds, Atwell’s family and the Elizabethtown community are left to grapple with the loss of a teenager whose life ended far too soon.
