17-year-old boy beats his grandmother to death at Mississippi church

ATHENS, MS – The quiet community of Athens was left reeling this week after investigators revealed a 17-year-old will face trial as an adult in the beating death of his grandmother inside a local church.

Authorities responded to Smith Chapel Holiness Church on Wednesday evening following a 911 call requesting paramedics. When emergency crews arrived at around 5:45 p.m., they found 73-year-old Ollie Hamilton unresponsive in an area adjacent to the church’s kitchen. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Monroe County coroner.

Investigators immediately began collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses at the church, located roughly 175 miles northeast of Jackson and not far from the Alabama border. Sheriff’s deputies noted several indications onsite that drew their attention to Jadynn Hamilton, the victim’s grandson.

According to officials, early in the investigation, witnesses told deputies that a young man present at the church had attempted to seek help for Ollie Hamilton. Detectives soon identified that young man as 17-year-old Jadynn Hamilton. After gathering more evidence and questioning those involved, deputies took Jadynn into custody later that night.

Law enforcement said that during questioning, Jadynn Hamilton admitted responsibility for the fatal assault on his grandmother. He was subsequently arrested and has since been charged with first-degree murder. The decision was made to charge him as an adult due to the severity of the crime.

Sheriff Kevin Crook described the event as a devastating blow to both the Hamilton family and the broader Athens community. He noted that Ollie Hamilton was widely regarded as a cherished member of the church and her neighborhood.

“This kind of tragedy shakes the core of any small town, especially when it involves people so well-known and respected in the community,” Crook explained.

As the investigation moves forward, authorities have not shared information regarding a motive behind the attack. Officials stated that Jadynn Hamilton did not have any prior criminal record. The lack of an apparent motive has left many within the community searching for answers after such an unexpected loss.

Crook commented that impulse control can play a substantial role in sudden acts of violence, regardless of victim or circumstance. He added that sometimes, the individual targeted is simply the person closest during a moment of uncontrollable anger.

Jadynn Hamilton remains in custody at the Monroe County Detention Center, where his bond has been set at $500,000. A court date has not yet been announced as the investigation continues.

The loss of Ollie Hamilton, a beloved church member and family matriarch, has drawn outpourings of grief from residents and loved ones, many of whom describe her commitment to community and faith over the years. Meanwhile, authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward as they continue to piece together what happened in the church that evening.
