17-year-old Ohio girl intentionally hits brick wall going 100mph to kill her friend and boyfriend

PARMA, OH – A chilling piece of bodycam footage captures the arrest of Mackenzie Shirilla, a teenager whose life took a dark turn after she was found guilty of murder. The Ohio native, now 20, was convicted in August 2023 for a horrifying crash that killed her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, 20, and another young man, Davion Flanagan, 19.

In the bodycam footage, Shirilla can be heard politely asking officers to be cautious with her bracelet as they handle her handcuffs. Her demeanor seemed at odds with the severity of the charges she would soon face. A video obtained from surveillance cameras showed Shirilla methodically turning from Pearl Road onto Alameda Drive before accelerating down the road and crashing into a brick wall at speeds near 100 mph.

Russo and Flanagan were killed instantly, while Shirilla survived the crash, trapped in the driver’s seat. It was this footage that proved pivotal in her court case. Judge Nancy Margaret Russo, who is not related to Dominic Russo, highlighted the stark evidence shown by the video during the trial.

“The video clearly shows the purpose and intent of the defendant,” Judge Russo stated. According to the judge, Shirilla’s actions were characterized as “controlled, methodical, deliberate, intentional, and purposeful,” as she sought to end the lives of the two young men seated beside her.

Despite the defense’s arguments, whether Shirilla also intended to kill herself remained speculative, playing no part in the determining of her guilt. She was handed a life sentence with a possibility of parole after 15 years, though Judge Russo expressed skepticism about her release so soon due to what the prosecution described as a “shocking lack of remorse.”

Prosecutors pointed to post-crash behavior to support their claims, noting Shirilla’s attendance at a concert in her wheelchair amidst her recovery. She maintained her innocence throughout the trial, appearing unyielding during emotional victim impact statements from Dominic Russo’s mother, Christine Russo.

Christine Russo’s heartache echoed through the courtroom as she recounted the tragedy. “No one wanted this to be a murder,” she said, visibly anguished. “But this was not a car accident. The evidence and science proved that Mackenzie Shirilla murdered my son Dominic as well as Davion.”

The ruling has left a community grappling with loss and a grim reminder of the destructive potential of deliberate actions behind the wheel.
