LYNNWOOD, WA – A heated conversation about religious beliefs on Easter Sunday allegedly escalated into violence, leaving both parents of a Washington teenager injured. McKenzy Hafer, 19, faces charges of attempted second-degree murder in connection with an altercation that authorities say stemmed from a family argument regarding faith.
The incident began when Benjamin Hafer, McKenzy’s father, extended an Easter greeting to his daughter. Her response, expressing disbelief in God, triggered an argument between them. Following the exchange, the two moved to separate rooms in the family home located in Lynnwood.
Erin Hetzler, McKenzy’s mother, later confronted her daughter about the conversation, leading to another heated discussion. Despite McKenzy attempting to diffuse the situation by wishing her father a “Happy Resurrection Day,” the verbal clash with her mother intensified.
According to court reports, McKenzy was in the kitchen when Hetzler approached her about the earlier dispute. This confrontation reportedly escalated, culminating in McKenzy throwing her phone to the floor in frustration. Benjamin Hafer then entered the room, prompting McKenzy to allegedly seize a kitchen knife and stab him in the stomach.
The confrontation reportedly continued as McKenzy turned the knife on her mother, inflicting a stab wound to Hetzler’s throat. Both parents sustained serious injuries but are expected to survive.
The couple’s son, Dakota Hafer, was present in the home during the incident but did not participate in the altercation. Authorities say that McKenzy’s recollection of the events aligns with the injuries observed on her parents.
Following the incident, McKenzy Hafer was apprehended and charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder. Hafer remains in custody with bail set at $500,000. Her preliminary court hearing is slated for May 5.
This incident highlights a tragic escalation of a family dispute rooted in conflicting belief systems, underscoring the potential for severe consequences when verbal disagreements spiral out of control.
