LEWISVILLE, TX – A prominent Texas political figure is recovering from a brutal attack after being stabbed by her grandson, an incident that left her husband dead, authorities reported Monday.
Bobbie J. Mitchell, known for her pioneering role as the first Black mayor of Lewisville and her current position as a Denton County commissioner, survived the violent encounter. Police identified the attacker as 23-year-old Mitchell Blake Reinacher, who was subsequently arrested on charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Emergency services responded to a distressing call before dawn from a residence in the 1000 block of Springwood Drive, situated in the northwest segment of the Dallas metropolitan area. Upon arrival, an officer immediately detected the sound of screams emanating from inside the dwelling, propelling him to enter. Inside, he apprehended Reinacher, who lived at the home with his grandparents.
Both Bobbie Mitchell and her husband, Fred Mitchell, were discovered with critical stab wounds and were rushed to nearby medical facilities. Despite frantic efforts by medical personnel, Fred Mitchell was pronounced dead at around 5 a.m. Bobbie Mitchell remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Authorities, led by Lewisville Police Chief Brook Rollins, have yet to determine what sparked the altercation that led to such a tragic outcome. The community reels from the shock, grappling with the grim events involving a family long respected in the region.
Bobbie Mitchell’s illustrious career began when she broke barriers in 1993 by becoming the mayor of Lewisville, serving until 2000, before continuing her public service as a county commissioner representing Lewisville and adjacent areas. Her leadership and devotion to the community have been widely celebrated.
In response to the incident, Lewisville Mayor TJ Gilmore expressed both sorrow and hope, noting that while the community is heartbroken by Fred Mitchell’s passing, they are optimistic about Bobbie Mitchell’s recovery. He urged residents to support the Mitchell family, encouraging acts of kindness and solidarity during this challenging period.
Reinacher, a grandson of the Mitchells, currently remains in custody at the Lewisville jail. Details about his legal representation or upcoming court dates remain undisclosed. The police are diligently working to piece together the events of that fateful morning, though a motive still eludes them.
