LOUISVILLE, KY – A Kentucky jury has recommended a 35-year prison sentence for Jeremy Thompson, who was found guilty in the 2022 murder of his girlfriend, Kierrea Stone-Gonzalez. The crime, which left Stone-Gonzalez’s 2-year-old daughter alone with her deceased mother for days, has shocked the Louisville community.
Thompson, 30, was convicted last week of murdering Stone-Gonzalez, as well as possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. The jury suggested a concurrent five-year sentence for the weapons charge. With his sentences set to run at the same time, Thompson will be eligible for parole after serving 20 years. Sentinel Circuit Judge is scheduled to issue the formal sentencing on July 2.
According to the Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Thompson fatally shot Stone-Gonzalez in the back of the head on or around September 17, 2022. Her body was discovered four days after the shooting, with her toddler daughter present in the apartment.
The investigation into the murder revealed crucial evidence left by Thompson, including a series of threatening messages he sent to Stone-Gonzalez via Facebook.
He reportedly boasted about the incident, referencing the shooting as the act of a “professional.” Thompson told police, following his Miranda rights, that a dispute over infidelity led to a struggle for the gun, which he claimed went off accidentally.
Gerina D. Whethers, the Commonwealth’s Attorney, expressed the jury’s sentiment, underscoring the violent impact on families and the broader community. “This verdict holds the defendant accountable for the devastating loss of a young mother,” Whethers said, lamenting the pervasive issue of gun violence.
In an obituary, Stone-Gonzalez was remembered as a compassionate individual, always ready to assist those in need. Her dedication to her family stood out prominently, alongside her recent accomplishments, including securing a position at a local hospital and pursuing a college education. However, the most significant role in her life was motherhood. “Oh, how she loved her daughter and wanted to excel as a mother,” the obituary noted.
This tragic case emphasizes the ripple effects of domestic violence and underscores ongoing community efforts to combat gun-related crimes across the region.
