24-year-old Arizona woman stabs her mother over 18 times inside condo while she screams for help

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – A Scottsdale woman is facing multiple felony charges after police say she brutally attacked her mother with a knife, inflicting nearly 20 stab and cut wounds during a violent confrontation at their home on Monday.

The incident reportedly began when Ashland Crank, 24, was told by her mother that she needed to get dressed because they would be heading to a mental health and alcohol treatment center. According to police documents, Crank became enraged upon hearing the news and attacked her mother at the family’s condominium.

Authorities say Crank’s mother had gone out to the backyard to clean up after the family dog when she was ambushed from behind. She sustained at least 18 stab wounds and cuts to her head, neck, back, and chest. In the aftermath of the attack, she reportedly told first responders that her own daughter was the assailant.

Neighbors were alerted to the commotion by cries for help coming from the condo. One neighbor spotted the victim being dragged by Crank toward the garage and tried to intervene by calling police. Investigators later reviewed a brief video provided by a witness, depicting Crank attempting to pull her injured mother back inside after the woman managed to escape to the front of the building.

During the struggle, Crank’s mother collapsed onto the sidewalk outside, covered in blood from her injuries. Witnesses reported that Crank began what appeared to be life-saving measures, but only after several neighbors had come outside and observed the situation.

When Scottsdale officers arrived, they found a chaotic scene with blood stains present on multiple levels of the three-story home. Several knives were recovered, including one broken blade covered in blood and hair. Police also took note of a shattered flower pot at the scene.

According to statements from the victim, Crank stabbed her so forcefully that the knife snapped, leading her daughter to retrieve additional weapons from inside the residence and continue the assault. The mother stated she feared for her life, believing if she was forced upstairs she would not survive, prompting her desperate attempt to reach the garage and escape.

While on the ground, the victim said she heard her daughter falsely telling bystanders that the injuries had been self-inflicted. Investigators reviewing the wounds determined they were in areas unlikely to have been caused by the woman herself, further undermining Crank’s account.

During interviews with authorities, Crank initially claimed she had caught her mother harming herself after finishing a shower on the third floor. However, police observed inconsistencies in her story, including evidence that suggested the shower had not been used as she described.

Crank’s mother, who is recovering in the hospital, told police her daughter struggles with mental health issues and alcoholism. The pair had been planning to visit a behavioral health facility that day, both to arrange care for another daughter and begin treatment for Crank.

Following the investigation and a series of contradictory statements from Crank, officers arrested her at the scene. She is charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping, and disorderly conduct involving a weapon.

Crank is being held on a $300,000 cash bond as her mother continues to recover from serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.
