LOS ANGELES, CA – A routine shift at a Melrose Avenue convenience store took a harrowing turn for 7-Eleven employee Jessica McLaughlin, who now lies on life support following an alleged attack by her manager that left her brain deprived of oxygen.
The Los Angeles Police Department said officers responded to a call at the 7-Eleven located in the 5700 block of Melrose Avenue, near Paramount Pictures, after reports of a violent confrontation between employees. Investigators arrived to find a woman in her 20s unconscious and unresponsive. The suspect, reportedly a manager at the store, had fled before police arrived.
According to family members, McLaughlin, whose age was not immediately released, was nearing the end of her shift on June 24 when she was confronted by her manager. The assailant allegedly threw a bottle before restraining McLaughlin on the floor, preventing her from breathing. Other coworkers attempted to intervene but were reportedly assaulted as well.
Bystanders at the scene administered CPR until paramedics reached the store and rushed McLaughlin to a local hospital. Despite emergency efforts, doctors later determined she had suffered catastrophic brain damage due to a lack of oxygen.
Relatives said doctors have found no brain activity, leaving the family with the heart-wrenching decision to withdraw life support. According to statements posted on a fundraising page, McLaughlin was remembered as a devoted sister, daughter, and friend, cherished by those who knew her for her compassion and kindness.
“She had a way of making people feel safe, accepted, and loved,” a family statement said, painting a portrait of a woman who consistently offered support to friends and family alike.
The attack reportedly unfolded just as McLaughlin was about to wrap up her shift. The manager, who hasn’t been publicly named by authorities, allegedly tried to delete security footage in the aftermath before fleeing the store on a bicycle.
Police have not announced any arrests as of Wednesday, but said the investigation remains active. Detectives are working to gather evidence and locate the suspect.
A spokesperson for 7-Eleven confirmed that the employee accused of the violence has been terminated. The company said it is cooperating fully with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
In the meantime, McLaughlin’s family is preparing for her funeral and grappling with their devastating loss. Supporters have rallied behind the family, offering both condolences and financial assistance as they process the tragedy.
No further details about a possible motive or additional suspects have been released, and authorities in Los Angeles are urging anyone with information on the incident to come forward.
