MORRISVILLE, PA – In a sobering courtroom scene Thursday, a 30-year-old local man accepted a life sentence without parole after pleading guilty to the second-degree murder of his mother in a brutal 2023 incident. Sean Rivera, hailing from Berwyn Road in Falls Township, admitted to the heinous crime of drugging his 72-year-old mother, Carol J. Clark, with fentanyl before driving her to Philadelphia and fatally shooting her, subsequently locking her body in a shed.
Rivera’s guilty plea extended to multiple charges, including kidnapping, aggravated assault, and possession of illegal substances and weapons. Common Pleas Judge Stephen A. Corr, upon accepting the plea agreement, described the crime as “horrific” and confirmed the concurrent sentences totaling 28 to 56 years for Rivera on the other charges. As part of his sentence, Rivera is prohibited from contacting his remaining family and must undergo mental health and drug evaluations.
The emotional hearing featured poignant statements from Clark’s other children, who reminisced about their mother’s long-standing service to communities across New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Clark was celebrated for her roles in public service, including her work at Staten Island Borough Hall, the Urban Women’s Center in Trenton, and the New Jersey Department of Human Services. Her dedication also extended to the Religious Society of Friends in Philadelphia, where she initiated several outreach programs benefiting local youth.
During the court proceedings, Clark’s children reflected on their mother’s legacy, highlighting her impact on countless lives. One son shared his pride in the positive contributions his mother made throughout her life, while her daughter lamented the loss of someone who made the world a better place.
The investigation began on April 9, 2023, following a domestic dispute report between Rivera and his brother about the missing Clark. Authorities discovered discrepancies in Rivera’s account after he informed his brother of their mother’s death without revealing her location. An alert was issued by Falls Township Police seeking public assistance.
Subsequent searches of Rivera’s residence and Clark’s vehicle uncovered two firearms, evidence of new padlocks, and bolt cutters, piecing together Rivera’s night of deception and murder. Investigators concluded that Rivera administered fentanyl in Clark’s iced tea on April 8, 2023, before transporting her to a Philadelphia shed. There, he used bolt cutters to access the shed, shot her multiple times, and secured her body inside with a newly purchased padlock.
“This defendant has such a coldness of heart,” remarked District Attorney Jennifer Schorn. She expressed outrage over Rivera’s actions, emphasizing the profound grief suffered by Clark’s surviving children and grandchildren. Schorn extended gratitude to the law enforcement and legal teams whose efforts ensured justice for the victim.
The investigation and prosecution were spearheaded by the Falls Township Police and the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office, with critical assistance from the Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit.
