DELTONA, FL – A tragic sequence of events unfolded early Monday when a man who recently posted bail on domestic violence charges fatally shot his ex-wife and subsequently ended his own life, authorities said.
Law enforcement agencies in Volusia County were alerted when 38-year-old Ashley Vaia’s lifeless body was discovered inside her Deltona home by her teenage daughter. Deputies swiftly responded to the scene around 2:22 a.m., initiating a manhunt for the suspect, 33-year-old Samuel Vaia, according to local authorities.
The suspect’s vehicle was soon identified as traveling at high speeds, escaping northbound from the county. Despite efforts to evade capture, Samuel Vaia crashed his car, officials confirmed. As law enforcement officers approached the wrecked vehicle, they found him with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Samuel Vaia had been arrested on March 23 for an alleged battery against Ashley Vaia and was released from custody after posting bail the following day. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood disclosed that the court had ordered Samuel to surrender his firearms. Although he did relinquish three weapons, it appears not all were accounted for.
During a press briefing, Sheriff Chitwood expressed frustration over the limitations of legal safeguards, noting that protective orders often fail to prevent determined individuals from causing harm. He described Samuel’s actions as a deliberate intent to commit murder.
The Vaia family was dealing with complex interpersonal issues. While Samuel and Ashley were separated, efforts were reportedly underway to reconcile. They shared a 2-year-old child, and Ashley was the mother of two older children, including the 19-year-old daughter who discovered her.
Following the crash, emergency responders transported Samuel Vaia to a Deltona area hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police reported.
