DETROIT, MI – A Detroit man is facing murder charges after allegedly shooting his girlfriend in the face at a motel in Redford Township.
The incident occurred early Saturday morning, prompting local police to respond to a reported shooting at an establishment located in the 9900 block of Telegraph Road, according to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Valentina Colban, 37, suffering from a gunshot wound to her face. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but unfortunately did not survive her injuries.
Authorities identified the alleged shooter as Jose Angel Oquendo-Torruella, 39, Colban’s boyfriend, also from Detroit. Reports indicate that Oquendo-Torruella was apprehended at the scene by police.
Prosecutors have charged Oquendo-Torruella with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. A guilty verdict could result in him serving a life sentence.
The suspect is scheduled for arraignment at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the 17th District Court in Redford Township.
Valentina was born in Radauti, Romania and is rembered by her family as a particularly kind and patient person. She worked in customer service and was a favorite aunt to her nieces and nephews.
