The San Francisco 49ers have officially announced the end of their relationship with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Head coach Kyle Shanahan stated that there is no foreseeable scenario where the team would bring back Garoppolo, who was their starting quarterback for the past three seasons.
The news comes after ESPN reported that the 49ers were likely to part ways with Garoppolo in the offseason. Yahoo Sports then followed up with a report that Shanahan had effectively shut the door on the possibility of Garoppolo returning to the team.
The 49ers have since confirmed that they will move forward with quarterback Brock Purdy and Trey Lance in 2023, and do not envision Garoppolo returning. The decision brings to a close a tumultuous tenure for Garoppolo in San Francisco, which included a Super Bowl appearance in 2020.
Garoppolo is now a free agent and will be able to sign with any team in the NFL. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the veteran quarterback, but it appears unlikely he will be back with the 49ers.
