TUPELO, MS – A disturbing incident unfolded in a quiet Tupelo neighborhood when police discovered a local man’s shocking confession to the murder of his mother. Joshua D. Lazore, 30, stands charged with first-degree murder, accused of beating his 62-year-old mother, Sherri West Lazore, with a shovel before disposing of her body in a trash can.
The tragic discovery came after officers from the Tupelo Police Department conducted a welfare check at their residence in the Villages subdivision on April 29. Sherri Lazore’s battered body was located in the backyard, leaving the community in shock.
During a bond hearing, further grim details were shared. In court, a detective recounted the scene where Joshua Lazore himself led the officers to his mother’s body. Prosecutors revealed that, in addition to the beating, the victim suffered multiple stab wounds to her head and neck.
In an unexpected twist during the proceedings, Joshua Lazore expressed intent to forego legal representation and proceed directly to a plea, signaling an inclination to take responsibility. However, Judge Willie Allen advised him against making plea statements at that time, focusing solely on the bond matter. Consequently, Lazore was denied bond and continues to be held at Lee County Jail.
This is not Lazore’s first run-in with the law. Previously, he had a notorious episode at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, where he attempted to turn himself in despite lacking any active warrants. His subsequent rampage through the office lobby, during which he damaged property, resulted in a felony charge of destruction of property. He later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation.
Sherri Lazore’s death is a significant blow to the local community. A dedicated educator, she spent nearly three decades at the Tupelo Public School District before retiring in 2012. Her contributions and warm demeanor left a lasting impact.
“She was beloved by students and colleagues alike,” remarked Gregg Ellis, a representative of the school district. “Her loss is deeply felt not only within our schools but across the entire Tupelo community.”
Even as the community mourns, attention turns to the legal proceedings that will follow. As investigations continue, the case underscores both the challenges of mental health and safety within families and the quiet struggles that sometimes lie hidden behind closed doors.
Joshua Lazore’s next court appearance looms, anticipated for discussions on his legal representation and the possible path forward in this tragic case.
