ATLANTA, GA – Moments before a jury was set to hear opening statements, a Georgia man admitted his guilt in the fatal stabbing of an elderly woman during an attempted vehicle theft nearly two years ago.
Antonio Brown, 26, pleaded guilty Monday to murdering 77-year-old Eleanor “Ellen” Bowles, averting a trial scheduled to begin that same day in Atlanta. According to court records, Brown entered a non-negotiated plea, accepting full responsibility for Bowles’s violent death in December 2022.
Investigators said Bowles encountered Brown in her garage on the morning of Dec. 10, 2022, after returning to her gated Buckhead home. Brown, attempting to steal Bowles’s Lexus SUV, attacked her with a knife when she confronted him, authorities reported. The assault left Bowles with more than a dozen stab wounds.
Bowles’s body was later discovered by her adult son, Michael Bowles, who arrived for a holiday visit only to find his mother lifeless on the garage floor. Michael delivered an emotional statement in court, describing the trauma of the scene and the enduring impact her murder has had on him and the family.
Police had been actively searching for Brown following another robbery earlier that day at a nearby liquor store. Prosecutors revealed they were prepared to present surveillance footage capturing Brown fleeing the scene in Bowles’s vehicle, alongside forensic evidence tying him to the crime, including DNA found on the murder weapon.
During Monday’s proceedings, Brown expressed remorse to Bowles’s family, telling the court no one should have to endure what she experienced. Despite his apology, prosecutors detailed the brutality of the attack, emphasizing that Bowles was stabbed multiple times and left to die on the garage floor.
The district attorney’s office outlined the personal loss suffered by Bowles’s loved ones, noting that she had been preparing for the holiday season when her life was cut short. The medical examiner’s expected testimony would have highlighted how Bowles fought back against her attacker in her final moments.
A grand jury had indicted Brown on 12 criminal counts, including felony murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and burglary. Following his plea, the presiding judge sentenced Brown to two consecutive life terms, with the possibility of parole not considered for at least six decades.
The case rattled the Buckhead community, sparking conversations about public safety in the affluent Atlanta neighborhood. Residents said Bowles was a beloved figure who frequently volunteered and cherished time with her family.
With the guilty plea and sentencing, Bowles’s family expressed hope for eventual peace, even as they continue to grapple with the void left by her loss.
