TIGARD, OR – Authorities have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with a violent attack that left an 82-year-old woman unconscious and seriously injured on a popular walking trail Sunday evening.

Police said Marcellus Ford, of Tigard, was taken into custody Tuesday following an extensive search after the incident, which took place along the Fanno Creek Trail around 6:45 p.m. Court records show that Ford faces a second-degree assault charge and made his first court appearance virtually on Wednesday from the Washington County Jail.

The victim, whose name was not released, had been walking alone when a younger man reportedly began trailing her. Without warning, she was physically assaulted. Authorities in Tigard stated that the suspect fled the scene, leaving the woman unconscious on the path.

Shortly after the attack, two cyclists came across the woman and immediately called 911. Emergency responders arrived and transported her to the hospital, where she remained in serious condition as of Tuesday, the most recent update from officials.

Investigators said early evidence suggested the assault was random, with no indication that the victim and the attacker knew each other. Police were able to advance their investigation with help from surveillance footage captured at the Tigard Public Library, situated near the scene of the attack. The image, taken shortly after the assault occurred, was shared publicly as police sought tips from the community.

The released photo quickly generated leads, leading officers to focus on Ford as a suspect. He was apprehended and booked into jail Tuesday evening.

The Fanno Creek Trail, a well-frequented path in Tigard, is generally regarded as a safe place for walking, jogging, and biking.
