New York, United States – After weeks of speculation, Kim Godwin is stepping down as President of ABC News. Debra OConnell, who took on ABC News in February, will be temporarily leading the department. The decision was announced internally, with Godwin also addressing her team of staff members.

When OConnell was promoted in February, rumors circulated about Godwin’s future at ABC News. Disney confirmed that Godwin had extended her contract as president, but would now report to OConnell, creating an additional layer in the hierarchy between her and Dana Walden, Disney Entertainment’s co-chairman.

Godwin’s departure comes after reports emerged from CNN regarding frustration among ABC News staffers concerning her management style. This dissatisfaction was reportedly conveyed to OConnell during a review of the division and its leadership.

Having joined ABC News in 2021, Godwin oversaw some tumultuous times during her tenure. She faced challenges like the departure of T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach due to a scandal over their off-screen relationship, as well as a series of layoffs and restructuring within the leadership team.

Despite the network’s successes under her leadership, such as the continued high viewership of “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight,” Godwin has decided to retire from broadcast journalism. In a note, she expressed her gratitude for the opportunities and challenges she faced during her career. “Anyone who’s passionate about what we do knows there’s no other business like it, so this was not an easy or quick decision,” she wrote.

OConnell, in her message to the team, acknowledged Godwin’s contributions and expressed her commitment to guiding ABC News forward during this transitional period. The National Association of Black Journalists also issued a statement expressing concern over the media reports that appeared to undermine Godwin’s leadership as the first Black woman to lead a global news organization.

Godwin’s exit follows a series of leadership changes within network news divisions. The reshuffling at ABC News echoes similar movements at CBS News and NBC News in recent months, indicating a broader trend of change within the industry.
