Belgrade, Serbia – During a recent anti-government rally in Belgrade, Serbia, a disturbing sound shattered the silence, prompting chaos among the peaceful protesters. Ivana Ilic Sunderic, who attended the rally, described the moment as an unprecedented experience, with many others recounting similar accounts of panic and fear during the incident on March 15.

The source of the alarming sound remains a subject of controversy, with accusations pointing towards the authorities and security services controlled by President Aleksandar Vucic. Allegations suggest the use of an illegal acoustic crowd control weapon to disperse the demonstrators, triggering uproar among the public.

The use of such weapons, including the Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD), is prohibited in Serbia due to their potential to cause severe harm, such as ear pain, disorientation, or hearing damage. The incident has intensified pressure on Vucic, already under scrutiny following months of anti-corruption protests in the country.

Despite official denials of deploying the LRAD against protesters, photos surfaced showing the device mounted on a vehicle during the rally. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic dismissed the claims, labeling the equipment as standard loudspeakers used for crowd warnings in emergencies.

Experts, however, question the official narrative, highlighting the sudden panic and stampede-like behavior displayed by the demonstrators. Thomas Withington, an electronic warfare expert, noted the unusual reactions of the crowd, suggesting a potential unconventional weapon’s involvement.

In response to growing concerns, Serbian rights groups have taken the matter to the European Court of Human Rights, citing testimonies from thousands of individuals reporting physical and psychological effects after the rally. Calls for an independent investigation have garnered support from various organizations seeking transparency and accountability.

As the controversy unfolds, the Serbian government has invited international entities, including the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and Russia’s Federal Security Service, to conduct a thorough investigation.
