MEXICO CITY, Mexico – A tragic turn of events has shaken the city of Leon, in north-central Guanajuato state, as news surfaced of the killing of an activist who documented the murders in one of Mexico’s deadliest cities. Adolfo Enríquez, described as an “activist demanding a country with the rule of law,” was murdered in Leon, a city with the third-highest number of homicides in Mexico.
Enríquez was known for his social media posts, where he meticulously tallied each murder in Leon. His dedication to shedding light on the violence in the city ultimately led to his own tragic demise, becoming murder victim number 56. Reports indicated that he was shot and killed after leaving a restaurant, with the attacker fleeing on a motorcycle.
The city of Leon, an industrial hub, has been plagued by bloody turf battles between the Jalisco drug cartel and local gangs backed by the Sinaloa cartel, contributing to the high rate of homicides in the region. Unfortunately, crimes against activists in Mexico are not uncommon, with several other activists and volunteers being killed in recent years due to their work in documenting cartel violence and advocating for change.
The tragic death of Adolfo Enríquez serves as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by those committed to exposing the violence and advocating for justice in Mexico. The impact of his work and the work of other activists will not be forgotten as they continue to face the threats and risks associated with their endeavors.
