RUTLAND, VT – Tate Rheaume, who was originally charged with negligent operation and eluding police resulting in death, now faces more severe charges, including aggravated murder, as announced by the Rutland County State’s Attorney’s office. These new charges, carrying a mandatory life sentence without parole, have increased the maximum potential sentence for Rheaume to 65 years.
The charges stem from a tragic incident in July where Rheaume, fleeing from police after a break-in, collided with a cruiser driven by 19-year-old probationary Officer Ebbighausen. This marked the first time a city police officer has been killed in the line of duty. Rheaume’s reckless actions, such as driving at high speeds in a low-speed zone and intentionally veering into oncoming traffic, have significantly heightened the legal consequences he now faces.
Currently out on $100,000 bail, Rheaume is scheduled for an in-person arraignment, with the State’s Attorney seeking to have him held without bail. The seriousness of the charges underscores the circumstances of the incident, highlighting Rheaume’s efforts to evade arrest and the tragic outcome that resulted from his actions.
The community is in mourning for Officer Ebbighausen, a young officer on his way to full certification. The aftermath of this tragic event has deeply impacted the city, causing reverberations throughout the community.
The expanded charges against Rheaume shed light on the gravity of the situation and the devastating consequences of his actions. As the legal proceedings unfold, the community will continue to come to terms with the loss of Officer Ebbighausen and the implications of this heartbreaking event. This case serves as a sobering reminder of the risks and sacrifices law enforcement officers make in the line of duty.
The city of Rutland faces a long road ahead in healing from this tragedy and seeking justice for Officer Ebbighausen. The outcome of Rheaume’s trial will undoubtedly have lasting effects on the community and the law enforcement community as a whole.
