DOVER, Fla. — A local resident is sounding the alarm after experiencing a sophisticated scam involving artificial intelligence that exploited her daughter’s voice to solicit a substantial sum of money. Sharon Brightwell’s ordeal began last week when she received a distressing phone call from a number that appeared to be her daughter’s.

On the line was a young woman who was sobbing, claiming she had been involved in a serious car accident. “There is nobody that could convince me that it wasn’t her,” Brightwell said, firmly recalling the unmistakable sound of her daughter’s cries. The caller asserted that she had struck a pregnant woman while texting and driving, and stated that police had confiscated her phone.

A male voice soon joined the conversation, purporting to be an attorney representing her daughter. He informed Brightwell that her child was being detained and needed $15,000 in cash for bail. Following the caller’s urgent instructions, she withdrew the money, placing it in a box as directed. A driver arrived shortly after to collect the package.

However, the scam escalated from there. Brightwell later received another call claiming that the unborn child had died, and the family of the victim would not sue if she provided an additional $30,000. At this point, her grandson intervened. He was on the phone with a family friend, who quickly reached out to Brightwell and connected her directly with her real daughter. Overwhelmed with relief, she exclaimed, “When I heard her voice, I broke down. She was fine. She was still at work.”

The family suspects that the scammers used social media clips to create a convincing AI-generated imitation of her daughter’s voice, a tactic that has raised serious concerns about cybersecurity. “I pray this doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Brightwell added. “My husband and I are recently retired. That money was our savings.”

In light of her experience, Brightwell is advocating for others to take preventive measures when receiving urgent requests for money. She recommends establishing a private “code word” for family members to verify their identities during emergencies. “If they can’t give it to you, hang up and call them directly,” she advised.

A formal report has been submitted to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office as authorities investigate the matter. Meanwhile, the family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to recoup their financial losses, highlighting the urgent need for vigilance in an era where technology can easily be manipulated for fraud.
