BIRMINGHAM, AL – An Alabama man allegedly embarked on a violent spree, leaving three individuals dead and two more critically injured in a harrowing sequence of events spanning multiple locations in Birmingham on August 8.
Kerry Jackson Jr., 32, faces multiple charges, including two counts of capital murder and two counts of attempted murder, in relation to the shootings that have rocked the local community. Authorities responded to the initial call around 4:45 p.m., discovering chaos and tragedy at a residence on the 1600 Block of Dennison Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers found 49-year-old Laquita Dunn deceased, a victim of multiple gunshot wounds. During the initial investigation, police learned Jackson’s father had also been shot. A family member had transported him to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
As authorities worked the scene, another emergency call came in from a home nearby on the 1400 Block of 17th Place Southwest. Responding officers discovered two more victims: 76-year-old Anthony Jackson, the suspect’s grandfather, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and a woman later identified as Jackson’s longtime girlfriend. She was rushed to the hospital with grave injuries but survived.
Thanks to swift collaboration between the Birmingham Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson was apprehended about five hours later at the Five Points West Shopping District.
The grim details of the incident were further illuminated during a Wednesday court hearing. Witness testimony revealed that Jackson’s grandmother, present at the Dennison Drive location, noticed her grandson behaving erratically with a firearm. Detective Kristopher Hatcher stated that Jackson allegedly began the spree by fatally shooting Dunn in the kitchen.
The tragedy escalated as Jackson’s parents, upon hearing of the shooting, rushed back to the house. It was then that Jackson reportedly shot his father as he exited their vehicle. Subsequently, he allegedly coerced his mother at gunpoint to drive to the 17th Place home, where he shot his grandfather and girlfriend. Following the shooting, his mother fled to a nearby gas station to seek help.
While the motive remains unclear, family members suggested that Jackson, who reportedly grappled with drug addiction, may have experienced a severe mental break. Jackson is currently detained at the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
The case now awaits grand jury review following the judge’s determination of probable cause for indictment.
