Animal Cruelty Hoarding Case Uncovered in Lakeland Home

LAKELAND, Fla. – Authorities in Lakeland, Florida responded to a distressing complaint about animal neglect and hoarding at a residence in the area. Upon arrival, investigators were met with a strong smell of ammonia emanating from the house, prompting further action.

Inside the home, 66-year-old Catherine Briley admitted to living alone with approximately 16 cats and a dog. However, upon inspection, detectives discovered a much larger number of cats – between 20 to 25 – roaming the premises, some experiencing health issues.

The situation escalated when Polk County Fire Rescue measured dangerous levels of ammonia and toxic industrial chemicals in the air. The animals were found in deplorable conditions, surrounded by overflowing litter boxes, feces, and urine.

Authorities were forced to remove 27 live cats and a neglected dog from the property, where five deceased cats were also discovered. All animals were infested with fleas and in need of immediate care.

Briley now faces a litany of charges, including animal cruelty and confining animals without proper food and water. The case has shed light on the severe consequences of hoarding and neglecting animals in such horrific conditions.

Following their rescue, the animals were taken to Polk County Animal Control for thorough examinations and treatment. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilant oversight and care for pets to prevent such cruelty from occurring.
