WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. regulators have initiated inquiries into major players in the artificial intelligence industry, including Microsoft, OpenAI, and Nvidia, regarding potential breaches of antitrust laws. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have reportedly reached an agreement to investigate these companies, with the focus on ensuring fair competition in the AI market. The investigations are expected to be completed in the coming days.

The DoJ will lead the investigation into Nvidia, a key player in the development of AI systems and chips, to determine if the company has violated antitrust laws. Meanwhile, the FTC will be looking into OpenAI, the company behind the popular ChatGPT chatbot, as well as Microsoft, which is a major investor in OpenAI and other AI companies. The Wall Street Journal has reported that the FTC is also examining a recent deal between Microsoft and startup Inflection AI to assess any potential antitrust concerns.

This move comes as the FTC has shown a growing interest in the AI market. Earlier this year, the FTC requested information from several big tech companies, including OpenAI, Microsoft, Google parent company Alphabet, Amazon, and Anthropic, regarding their investments and partnerships in generative AI companies and cloud service providers. Additionally, the FTC has previously investigated OpenAI for potential violations of consumer protection laws related to data security issues.

Jonathan Kanter, the head of the DoJ’s antitrust division, emphasized the importance of quickly addressing potential monopoly issues and ensuring a competitive landscape in the technology sector. This collaborative effort between the DoJ and FTC reflects a shift towards more coordinated antitrust enforcement under the current administration.

As Nvidia’s valuation recently reached $3 trillion, surpassing Apple, the scrutiny on major AI players is intensifying. Despite the ongoing investigations, Microsoft stated that it believes it has adhered to antitrust regulations in its dealings with Inflection AI. Both the FTC and DoJ, as well as Nvidia and OpenAI, declined to comment on the matter.
