Armed gunman murders two gas station clerks for lottery tickets

DALLAS, TX – Davonta Mathis, a 21-year-old man from Texas, was charged with capital murder in connection with the execution-style killings of two gas station attendants in the Dallas area. Authorities say the murderous spree Mathis carried out was motivated by desperation for lottery tickets and a new apartment.

The suspect is accused of striking twice within a day, leaving a trail of horror and loss in the community. The first shooting occurred at Jaxx Fuel in Mesquite shortly before midnight, where 60-year-old Muhammad Hussain was gunned down. The subsequent attack took place approximately 25 hours later at Fox Gas Station in Dallas, claiming the life of 32-year-old Gopi Krishna Dasari.

Investigations into both incidents revealed disturbing facts. According to Mesquite police, surveillance footage at Jaxx Fuel captured crucial details about the suspect, including his getaway vehicle. The video also showed the suspect, dressed in a hoodie and bandanna, abruptly opening fire at the register before seizing a batch of lottery tickets.

Following the second homicide, a witness’s distress call to 911 captured the terror of the moment when Dasari was fatally shot. A vigilant Mesquite police officer, while on routine patrol, spotted a vehicle matching the description. A pursuit ensued, leading to Mathis’s swift apprehension.

In statements to the police, Mathis allegedly confessed to both crimes, revealing a chilling disregard for his victims’ lives. He justified shooting Hussain to prevent a police chase and lamented not finding lottery tickets at the second location, claiming his crimes were fueled by a desire to win enough money for an apartment.

Mathis’s alleged crime wave didn’t go unnoticed, as law enforcement tracked down surveillance video purportedly showing him attempting to cash the stolen lottery tickets near his home in Waco.

Currently detained in the Dallas County Jail, Mathis is being held on a $12.5 million bond, as per online booking records.

While the accused faces the consequences, the community mourns the loss of Dasari, a recent immigrant from India remembered for his dreams and responsibilities, leaving behind a wife and young child. A GoFundMe page has been set up to offer his grieving family support during this devastating time.
