Artemis II: NASA’s Groundbreaking Lunar Mission to Set Human Records—Here’s What You Need to Know!

Kennedy Space Center, Florida — NASA’s ambitious Artemis II mission is set to take a significant step forward this Saturday as the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion capsule make their way from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launchpad. This rollout signals the beginning of a journey that aims to return humans to the vicinity of the Moon for the first time since Apollo 17 in 1972.

Scheduled to lift off no earlier than February 6, 2024, Artemis II will carry four astronauts: NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, alongside Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency. This mission not only marks the first crewed flight of the Artemis program but also positions it as a historic moment in space exploration, as it will see astronauts traverse beyond low-Earth orbit, setting a potential new record for the farthest distance humanity has traveled from Earth.

The mission, however, will not involve landing on the Moon. “The spacecraft is not designed for lunar landings, and our primary focus is crew safety and mission objectives,” explained Patty Casas Horn, deputy lead for Mission Analysis at NASA. “We want to ensure that we safely test the capabilities of our spacecraft before pursuing more complex maneuvers to the lunar surface.”

Artemis II follows the uncrewed Artemis I mission, which successfully orbited the Moon in November 2022. This timeframe marks the first time that astronauts will board the Orion capsule, which will cruise around the Moon before returning to Earth. According to Horn, this mission will allow the team to test systems for habitation and navigation, crucial aspects of preparing for future lunar landings.

“They will need food, water, and other comforts of home, and we will be testing various life support technologies,” she said. These updates are vital for the crew’s comfort and safety, highlighting the complexities that arise when adding human elements to space missions.

The mission’s configuration bears similarities to Apollo 8, which orbited the Moon without landing. Although Artemis II will not enter lunar orbit, the trajectory will consist of a “free return” path, allowing the crew to swing around the Moon and return home without additional maneuvers in case of emergency. This mission design emphasizes safety while allowing astronauts to conduct essential scientific observations.

While Artemis II will not land on the Moon, it serves as a critical step toward future missions. The first lunar landing under the Artemis program, scheduled for Orion’s Artemis III mission, will rely on the development of the Human Landing System, or Starship HLS, which is currently being developed by SpaceX.

Horn noted the rigorous testing that both Artemis and Apollo programs share, emphasizing the importance of each mission as a stepping stone toward more complex objectives. “We want to ensure all components are thoroughly vetted before sending humans on more extensive missions,” she explained.
