Framber Valdez Throws No-Hitter as Astros Defeat Guardians
Houston Astros pitcher Framber Valdez made history on Tuesday night, throwing the 16th no-hitter in Astros franchise history in a 2-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians. Valdez’s remarkable performance came just hours after the Astros reacquired ace Justin Verlander from the New York Mets.
Valdez was dominant throughout the game, allowing only one baserunner on a walk in the fifth inning. However, he faced the minimum number of batters thanks to a double play that occurred in that frame. In the ninth inning, Valdez retired the first two batters before inducing a lineout from Cam Gallagher to Jeremy Pena to seal the no-hitter and ignite the celebration.
The 29-year-old left-hander displayed his excitement by raising his arms above his head and clapping as a smile spread across his face. Valdez recorded seven strikeouts and threw just 93 pitches, making it one of the most efficient no-hitters or perfect games since 1988.
This season, Valdez’s no-hitter marks the third in the major leagues. Dominican pitcher Domingo Germán of the New York Yankees achieved a perfect game against the Oakland Athletics on June 28. Additionally, Matt Manning, Alex Lange, and Jason Foley of the Detroit Tigers combined to pitch a no-hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays on July 8.
Notably, this no-hitter is Houston’s first in the regular season since Cristian Javier, Hector Neris, and Ryan Pressly combined to no-hit the Yankees on June 25, 2022. It is also the first solo no-hitter by an Astros pitcher since Justin Verlander’s performance against the Blue Jays on September 1, 2019.
In terms of offense, outfielder Kyle Tucker provided the Astros with the necessary support, delivering a two-run single in the third inning. Valdez’s stellar performance on the mound was complemented by the team’s offensive contribution.
Valdez’s incredible outing follows a previous start in which he struggled, allowing eight hits and six runs in just 3 2/3 innings. This bounce-back performance further showcases the resilience and talent of the Astros’ pitching staff.
The Astros’ victory and Valdez’s exceptional no-hitter have undoubtedly solidified their position as serious contenders in the MLB. The team’s ability to acquire Verlander, a former Cy Young Award winner, bolstered their rotation and added depth to an already formidable pitching staff.
As the Astros celebrate this historic achievement, Valdez’s no-hitter will go down in the annals of Astros lore as a testament to his skill, composure, and determination on the mound. It is a moment that will be remembered by fans and players alike for years to come.
