Babysitters accuse each other of murdering 1-year-old girl dead of skull fractures and brain bleed

MEMPHIS, TN – In a tragic turn of events in Memphis, two babysitters have been charged with the murder of a 1-year-old girl after she succumbed to severe injuries, including multiple skull fractures and internal trauma. The child, identified as Kali Moore, was pronounced dead following rushed efforts to save her life at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital this past weekend.

The Memphis Police Department received an emergency call to the hospital around 3 a.m. Saturday, where baby Kali was battling cardiac arrest. Despite medical attention, the toddler passed away approximately an hour later. The attending physicians noted that Kali suffered from a constellation of injuries that were alarmingly severe and indicative of deliberate harm.

Dijon Smith, 34, and Kiya Moore, 21, were quickly apprehended by authorities. Their care for Kali began at around 5 p.m. on the prior Thursday. Conflicting accounts of the incident emerged after the two were read their Miranda rights. As the investigation continued, authorities found the caregivers’ stories not only inconsistent but also incriminating.

According to arresting documents, Moore suggested to investigators that she had left Kali alone with Smith for a time. Upon returning, she discovered Kali unresponsive but claims Smith concealed what had transpired, urging her to falsify a story involving an accidental fall. In contrast, Smith charged that it was Moore who abused the infant, recounting disturbing sounds of the baby being struck repeatedly against various surfaces.

Upon examining Kali’s body, the medical professionals unveiled further distressing facts: a brain hemorrhage, a bruised kidney, elevated liver enzymes consistent with abdominal injuries, and blood in the lungs. A subsequent search of the residence where Kali was under care turned up no baby food and raised questions regarding the adequacy and safety of her sleeping arrangements.

The local community reacted with disbelief and sorrow, with neighbors expressing their shock over the brutality of the crime and the heartbreaking loss of such a young life.

Both Smith and Moore currently remain in the Shelby County Jail, denied bond, and face charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. Further details indicate that Moore is a relative of Kali’s, but her exact relationship and additional family statements were not disclosed.
