Bank Teller Sentenced for Stealing $90K from Convenience Store Deposit

STATESBORO, Ga. – A former bank teller convicted of stealing nearly $90,000 from a convenience store’s deposit has been sentenced for bank fraud.

Kayla Monroe Evans, 32, of Metter, Georgia, was sentenced to two months in prison after admitting to bank fraud. Upon her release, she will serve an additional two months in home confinement and five years of supervised release. Additionally, she has to pay $97,165 in restitution.

Evans, who worked at Synovus Bank in Metter, was responsible for handling deposits from a local convenience store. An auditor for the store noticed a discrepancy between the amount of money taken to the bank for deposit and the amount reflected in the store’s account. This led to an investigation in which it was discovered that Evans personally handled the store’s deposits and frequently skimmed money for her personal use.

As part of her plea deal, Evans agreed to pay back the stolen amount and to never work in any financial institution again. U.S. Attorney Jill E. Steinberg said, “Kayla Evans violated the trust of her employer and its customer, and is being held accountable for her theft. This sentence offers assurance that those who commit fraud will be brought to justice.”

In summary, a former bank teller in Georgia has been sentenced for stealing almost $90,000 in deposits from a convenience store, pleading guilty to bank fraud and facing prison time, home confinement, supervised release, and restitution payment.
