Residents in Northern California were hit with blizzard conditions over the weekend, experiencing damaging winds and heavy snow across mountain ridges down to the valleys. Approximately 6.5 million people in the Mountain West are under winter weather alerts, with blizzard warnings still in effect for the Sierra Nevada region. The most severe conditions are occurring at the highest elevations, with whiteout conditions and hurricane-force winds in the Sierra Nevada.
The snowfall has led to the closure of a 70-mile stretch of Interstate 80 near the Nevada state line for more than a day as highway officials reported stranded drivers. The Weather Prediction Center has warned of extremely heavy snowfall rates of 2-6 inches an hour combined with winds exceeding 100 mph, creating treacherous travel conditions in the Sierra Nevada. Additionally, the National Weather Service has issued “high to extreme” avalanche warnings for the Central Sierra and Greater Lake Tahoe area through Sunday afternoon.
Forecasts indicate that around 5-12 feet of snow is expected to accumulate along the crest of the Sierra by late Sunday, with damaging wind gusts reaching potentially above 75 mph in the Intermountain West. These powerful winds may lead to downed trees and power lines, causing widespread power outages in the region. Cooler temperatures are also expected to lower snow levels into many valleys in the West.
As the storm begins to wind down later on Sunday, a new system is expected to follow on Monday, according to the weather service. The turbulent weather has forced the closure of ski fields and chairlifts at various resorts, including Palisades Tahoe, Sierra at Tahoe, and Mammoth, with some establishments anticipating delayed operations on Sunday. Images from Sierra-at-Tahoe in Twin Bridges show accumulated snow impeding the resort’s operations, with vehicles buried under the heavy snowfall.
The National Weather Service has stressed the severity of the conditions, citing extreme snowfall and roaring winds in the Sierra and northern ranges that have created blowing snow and whiteout conditions, rendering travel nearly impossible. Major roadways such as US 395 and I-80 have been closed due to whiteout conditions, with motorists stranded and in need of rescue. Emergency personnel and tow trucks have faced challenges reaching stranded motorists in blizzard conditions, prompting authorities to urge residents to avoid travel and stay informed about road conditions.
