Bluesky Surpasses Meta’s Threads in User Numbers as Elon Musk’s X Loses Ground

San Francisco, California – A new social media platform, Bluesky, is making waves as users flock to it in search of a more user-friendly experience. Created by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, Bluesky has seen a significant increase in user numbers, surpassing Meta’s Threads in popularity. Despite this success, Threads still leads in app usage.

According to data from Similarweb, Bluesky’s app and website usage in the United States saw a significant boost following President-elect Donald Trump’s election win, with a reported 3.5 million daily users. As of November 22, the platform boasts around 21.5 million users.

Bluesky CEO Jay Graber expressed excitement about the platform’s growth, noting that they have been adding around a million users daily. The platform, launched in 2019, allows users to post text, videos, and photos, as well as engage with other users through replies and sharing posts. Digital rights activist and software engineer Graber now leads the platform.

One factor contributing to Bluesky’s success is its “starter pack” feature, which enables users to follow curated groups of accounts with ease. However, the platform has faced challenges with outages, glitches, and concerns about its long-term sustainability as a business model.

The shift towards Bluesky has been attributed to discontent among users of Elon Musk’s X, as Musk’s relaxed content moderation policies have raised concerns about the spread of misinformation. In contrast, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s decision to de-prioritize political content on platforms like Facebook and Instagram has also influenced users’ decisions.

Despite facing initial setbacks, Bluesky has gained momentum, with several businesses, celebrities, and journalists publicly announcing their departure from X in favor of the new platform. As Bluesky continues to attract users, the competition between social media platforms intensifies, reflecting changing user preferences and the evolving landscape of social networking.
