CHATTANOOGA, TN – An arrest has been made in Tennessee in the unsettling case of an Arizona woman who was brutally tortured and murdered last year. Mercedes Marianna Vega, 22, died in April 2023 after being found in the back seat of a burning car, having suffered atrocious injuries.
Vega was discovered near Tonopah, Arizona, after authorities responded to a vehicle fire in the early hours of April 17. Her autopsy revealed she had been severely beaten, shot in the arm, and had bleach forced down her throat. Ultimately, she succumbed to smoke inhalation while being burned alive, her distraught parents announced, sharing the autopsy results publicly this past October.
Just before the ordeal, Vega was captured on surveillance video leaving her Tempe home for a night out with friends at a local restaurant and entertainment venue. Little did she know it would be her final moments of freedom.
On November 11, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office arrested Sencere Hayes, 22, in Tennessee. The man is now awaiting extradition to Arizona for his alleged involvement in Vega’s murder. Although the exact charges have not yet been disclosed, the arrest was made by the homicide unit, indicating the gravity of the accusations.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate, emphasizing the case remains open and active. They are collaborating with the county attorney’s office to expedite Hayes’s transfer to Arizona, a spokesperson confirmed.
Vega’s parents expressed both sorrow and relief upon hearing of the arrest. According to Vega’s mother, Erika Pillsbury, this time of year is particularly challenging given the family’s holiday traditions. Her stocking will still be placed alongside her siblings’ to honor her memory.
Mercedes is fondly remembered as an exceptionally talented and spirited young woman. She excelled academically, was an accomplished violinist and singer, often performing at special events, and was passionate about swimming and the ocean.
Investigators informed Vega’s parents that she was likely kidnapped from her parking garage in Tempe. Her final hours were marked by unimaginable violence, including being beaten and forcibly abducted.
The scene at the parking garage, visited by her parents days after her death, gave no respite, with bloodstains marking the spot from where she was taken.
Authorities believe additional arrests are likely as the investigation progresses. However, Vega’s parents see this initial arrest as a pivotal step towards justice for their daughter.
Tom Pillsbury, Vega’s father, expressed hope that justice would be served, reflecting a mix of grief and determination. The family continues to wait for more developments as extradition proceedings for Hayes move forward, with officials pledging to release more information as it becomes available.
