WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Pentagon has initiated the deployment of 1,500 active duty troops to assist in securing the southern border, following through on plans outlined in executive orders issued by President Donald Trump shortly after taking office. The troops will play a variety of roles, including flying helicopters to aid Border Patrol agents, providing military airlift for deportation flights, and assisting in the construction of barriers, according to Acting Defense Secretary Robert Salesses.
The mission of the troops and the number deployed may evolve in the future, with Salesses stating that “this is just the beginning.” It remains to be determined if the troops will engage in law enforcement activities, which would mark a significant departure from their traditional duties. The deployment of these active duty forces will supplement the existing 2,500 National Guard and Reserve forces already stationed at the border, filling a critical gap as no active duty troops were previously stationed along the 2,000-mile border.
The deployment of troops to the border is not a new phenomenon, with similar actions being taken in the past under both the Trump and Biden administrations. While troops are legally prohibited from engaging in law enforcement activities under the Posse Comitatus Act, there has been discussion of invoking the Insurrection Act to potentially allow for expanded roles for the military on U.S. soil. The last time this act was invoked was during the 1992 riots in Los Angeles.
The recent deployment of troops is part of a broader effort to enhance border security and curb unlawful migration, an issue that President Trump campaigned heavily on. The move comes as part of a larger strategy to address migration, drug trafficking, and transnational crime along the border. Throughout the years, the military has played a crucial supporting role to Border Patrol agents, providing logistical services and support to bolster border security efforts.
As the situation at the border continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the deployment of troops will impact the overall border security landscape. The utilization of military assets and personnel in this capacity represents a significant shift in how border security is approached and underscores the complex challenges faced in ensuring the integrity of the nation’s borders.
