WASHINGTON — In a move that underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding President Trump’s administration, several Democrats are planning to stage a boycott of his upcoming State of the Union address and will instead host an alternative event, dubbed the “People’s State of the Union,” on the National Mall. The decision follows widespread criticism of Democratic behavior during Trump’s previous address, where members of the party engaged in disruptive actions.

Organizers of the alternative gathering, including the progressive advocacy group MoveOn and the media platform MeidasTouch, are mobilizing supporters to voice their opposition to Trump’s policies. While some party leaders are expected to attend the official address, such as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who expressed his intention to remain present during the president’s speech, many rank-and-file members are choosing the counterevent.

“We’re not going to Donald Trump’s house; he’s coming to our house,” said Jeffries, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a Democratic presence. This marks Trump’s fourth State of the Union, with a mix of anticipation and dissent surrounding the occasion.

Though the final number of participating Democrats in the alternative event remains uncertain, initial confirmations indicate that about a dozen lawmakers are planning to join the rally. Among them are Senators Ed Markey, Jeff Merkley, Chris Murphy, and others, along with Representatives such as Pramila Jayapal and Greg Casar.

Some Democrats are even contemplating a walkout during Trump’s speech, intending to highlight particular moments they deem objectionable. Representative Jared Huffman indicated that he will likely leave if he finds any of the president’s remarks particularly egregious.

Last year, during a joint session of Congress that did not carry the State of the Union title, Representative Al Green made headlines for his vocal protests, leading to his removal from the House chamber. Democratic leadership had previously urged members to conduct themselves respectfully during the televised address, amid a backdrop of mental strain on party unity.

The Planned People’s State of the Union aims to shed light on pressing issues such as healthcare costs and economic inequalities, along with stories from individuals affected by these challenges. High-profile commentators, including Joy Reid and Katie Phang, are set to co-host the event, ensuring a platform for diverse voices within the party.
