Brian Sicknick, an officer with the United States Capitol Police, was pepper-sprayed by a rioter on January 6th and later died due to injuries sustained from the attack. On Friday, the man responsible for the attack, Julian Khater, was sentenced to nearly seven years in prison.
Khater, 32, of Pennsylvania, was found guilty of assaulting an officer, civil disorder and obstruction of an official proceeding. He was also charged with two counts of assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon.
In addition to Khater, another rioter, Tanios of Morgantown, West Virginia, was sentenced on Friday for his role in the attack on Officer Sicknick. He was sentenced to over six years in prison for assaulting a Capitol Police officer, civil disorder and obstruction of an official proceeding.
The attack on Officer Sicknick was captured on video and widely shared on social media. The video showed Khater and Tanios attempting to break into the Capitol building and spraying Sicknick with a pepper spray-like substance.
The sentencing of Khater and Tanios comes as the FBI continues to investigate the attack on Officer Sicknick and the other violent acts that occurred during the attack on the Capitol building. The FBI has charged more than 300 people in connection with the attack and is still searching for more suspects.
The death of Officer Sicknick has been a rallying cry for justice for those who participated in the attack on the Capitol building. His death has also been a reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face every day.
