Bronny James in Stable Condition After Cardiac Arrest, USC Confirms

USC Freshman Bronny James in Stable Condition After Cardiac Arrest During Practice

In a statement on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the James family confirmed that USC freshman Bronny James, son of Lakers star LeBron James, is in stable condition after suffering a cardiac arrest during practice on Monday. The news was initially reported by TMZ. The statement also mentioned that Bronny James has been transferred out of the intensive care unit.

According to the spokesperson, the medical staff was able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital, where he is now in stable condition. The family is requesting respect and privacy during this time. They expressed their gratitude to the USC medical and athletic staff for their exceptional work and dedication to player safety.

Bronny James made headlines earlier this year when he announced his commitment to USC over other schools such as Ohio State, Oregon, G-League Ignite, and Overtime Elite. The McDonald’s All-American, ranked 21st in the 2023 class by the 247Sports Composite, will be the first member of the James family to attend college. LeBron James called the day his son committed “one of the best days of (his) life.”

The incident involving Bronny James comes a year after USC’s Vince Iwuchukwu suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during an unofficial practice. Iwuchukwu, a 7-foot-1 forward, was sidelined for six months before returning to play 14 games in his freshman season. The USC training staff members who responded to Iwuchukwu’s incident were honored with the California Athletic Trainers’ Association’s Lifesaver Award.

It is worth noting that there have been other cases of athletes collapsing or experiencing cardiac arrest during games or practices. Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who collapsed and went into cardiac arrest during a “Monday Night Football” game in January, sent his thoughts and support to the James family on social media.

Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood, resulting in a lack of blood flow to vital organs such as the brain. While Bronny James is now in stable condition, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of athlete safety and the prompt response of medical staff in such situations.

This incident will undoubtedly bring more attention to the issue of cardiac health in athletes and the need for preventive measures and protocols. USC and the James family are optimistic about Bronny James’ recovery and are focused on his well-being and privacy during this time. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
