Miami, Florida — Ameilia Boodoosingh Gopie, a mother of one, faced an unexpected battle with deep depression following the birth of her daughter in August 2022. Despite the joy of welcoming her baby, Gopie found herself struggling daily, often unable to engage with her child. “For eight months, my husband was basically a single dad,” she recalled. As her mental health suffered, she neglected routine medical appointments.
After nearly a year, Gopie began to reclaim her life, embarking on trips with her daughter to visit family across New York, Canada, and Trinidad. However, as her daughter took her first steps and began to talk, Gopie continued to skip essential health check-ups, focusing instead on bonding with her child.
In late December 2024, Gopie discovered an infection stemming from a minor shaving cut, prompting a visit to her primary care physician. During the appointment, her doctor emphasized the necessity of regular screenings, given her density of breast tissue, which indicated the need for earlier mammograms. He urged her to schedule an appointment, leading to an unexpected diagnosis.
On Christmas Eve, the results of her mammogram were alarming: Gopie had Stage III breast cancer. “Hearing that word shattered both of us,” she described, adding that her husband held their daughter while they both cried. Their little girl, unaware of the gravity of the situation, innocently comforted her parents.
In the days that followed, the family celebrated Christmas as normally as possible, all the while preparing for Gopie’s next steps. Further tests revealed she had triple-positive breast cancer, an aggressive form that affects approximately 10% of breast cancer patients but has characteristics that may respond favorably to treatment.
Facing an uphill battle, doctors recommended aggressive chemotherapy, leading to painful side effects that impacted both her health and her ability to engage with her daughter. “Even when I was too ill to be with her, I planned activities and wrote letters so I could stay connected,” Gopie explained.
To cope, Gopie documented her feelings through a video diary before each treatment session, a practice that turned into a vital outlet, allowing her to articulate her emotional struggle and maintain a sense of control over her experience.
Following her chemotherapy sessions, Gopie underwent a double mastectomy, which revealed more cancer in her breast tissue and lymph nodes, necessitating further treatment, including radiation. “Every new treatment brought a new set of challenges,” she admitted.
Still in a period of adjustment, Gopie described herself as being in a “limbo area,” with ongoing treatments affecting her daily life and responsibilities. Despite her journey, she remained committed to staying positive for her daughter.
Now, Gopie is working to establish a new sense of normalcy, having recently undergone reconstructive surgery. “It’s been a journey of learning to balance the old me with the new experiences of this fight,” she said. Fortunately, the depression that had once overshadowed her life has not returned.
With a renewed focus on cherishing time with her child, Gopie expressed gratitude for every moment. “I want to create joyful memories with my daughter, singing, laughing, and sharing love,” she said. “I look forward to brighter days ahead.”
