Carjacking and Torture: Florida Man Extradited to Face Charges in Sterling Heights Case

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, MI – A third Florida man has been charged in connection with the violent kidnapping and torture of a Sterling Heights man outside of a Macomb County gym, according to police. Renado Gary Coleman, 38, was taken into custody in Tampa, Florida by Shelby Township detectives. He has been charged with 12 felony counts, including home invasion and armed robbery, and is being held on a $5 million cash-only bond.

The alleged incident took place on October 23, 2023, when a 24-year-old man was carjacked at gunpoint by four armed and masked suspects outside of the Lifetime Fitness on Lakeside Boulevard. He was restrained in his own pickup truck and driven away, where the suspects allegedly tortured him before taking him to his house. Police arrived at the victim’s home and encountered one of the suspects in the truck with the victim. The abductor fled in the vehicle with the victim. During a subsequent chase, the suspect crashed and was taken into custody, and a loaded assault rifle was secured from the truck.

Authorities have also charged Angel Pantoja, 22, and Angel Antonio Andujar-Ruiz, 38, both of Tampa, in connection with the case, and are looking for at least one more suspect. According to Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido, Coleman’s alleged crimes are indicative of a dangerous individual who must be held accountable for his actions.

The investigation has involved several search warrants and interviews, leading detectives to the Tampa area where several arrests have been made. The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office has authorized 12 felonies against Coleman including carjacking, armed robbery, torture, unlawful imprisonment, and conspiracy charges. Shelby Township police have extended their thanks to the Tampa Bay Police Department, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, and the ATF Task Force for their continued assistance in the case.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for January 17 in front of Judge Douglas Shepherd for Pantoja. Andujar-Ruiz remains in the Macomb County Jail on a $3 million cash bond, with his next court hearing scheduled for January 30. The case is still under investigation, and officers have not publicly stated the connection between the victim and the suspects, indicating that it was not a random incident.
