The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning consumers about eyedrops sold at Walmart and other stores after reports of serious bacterial infections.
According to the CDC, 55 people in 12 states have been infected with a drug-resistant bacteria linked to the eyedrops, and one person has died as a result.
The CDC is advising consumers to stop using the eyedrops immediately and to dispose of any remaining product. The products were sold at Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, and Family Dollar stores.
The infections are caused by a type of bacteria called Burkholderia cepacia, which can cause serious eye infections and can spread to other parts of the body. Symptoms of the infection include redness, pain, and swelling in the eyes.
The CDC is also warning that the bacteria can spread to other people, so it is important to wash hands after any contact with the eyedrops.
The CDC is urging consumers to report any eye infections to their healthcare providers and to seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms.
The outbreak is still under investigation, and the CDC is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and state health departments to identify the source of the infections.
