Police say a prolonged dispute outside Tint World ended with John Christian dead and the mother of his child charged with murder.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — John Christian was preparing to leave work when witnesses said a black sedan pulled in front of his vehicle, blocking his path and setting the stage for a prolonged confrontation that ended with the 34-year-old fatally stabbed outside a southeast Charlotte auto business, according to police and court records.

The Aug. 18 confrontation at Tint World on Monroe Road unfolded in view of multiple witnesses, whose accounts became a central part of the police investigation. Authorities identified 32-year-old Keyara Shuntel McKnight, the mother of Christian’s child, as the woman who arrived in the sedan and argued with him. McKnight was later arrested in Indian Trail and charged with murder. WSOC-TV reported the charge as first-degree murder, while Law&Crime and other reports described it more generally as murder. The accusation remains pending, and the available reporting does not establish that McKnight has been convicted of any crime.

According to the probable cause affidavit cited by Law&Crime and Charlotte-area news organizations, officers were sent to Tint World, at 9129 Monroe Road, shortly after 6 p.m. after a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. Police found Christian suffering from an apparent stabbing injury to his torso. Officers and other first responders attempted to help him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Law&Crime reported that he was pronounced dead at 6:29 p.m., while WSOC-TV said officers had been dispatched at about 6:15 p.m. The killing prompted a homicide investigation by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Witnesses told investigators that Christian appeared to be closing the business when the older-model black Honda arrived. They said the car pulled in front of Christian’s vehicle and prevented him from immediately driving away. The affidavit said witnesses then saw a woman arguing with Christian and slapping him. The dispute was described as heated, with both people screaming as they moved around the vehicles. Those witness descriptions provided investigators with a sequence of events before Christian was found mortally injured, but the publicly reported affidavit does not provide a moment-by-moment account of how the stabbing itself occurred.

The confrontation continued around Christian’s vehicle, according to the witnesses. At one point, investigators were told, the woman entered the driver’s seat of Christian’s car. Christian then pulled her from the vehicle. Police described the argument as prolonged. Afterward, witnesses said, the woman returned to the black sedan and drove away at a high rate of speed. The available reports do not say that police immediately recovered a weapon at the business, and authorities had not publicly detailed in the reviewed reporting exactly when during the confrontation Christian suffered the fatal injury.

The witnesses gave investigators more than a general description of the woman. Police said people at the business had seen her and the car there before and believed she was the mother of Christian’s child. They also provided details about the sedan, which WSOC-TV reported had dark-tinted windows, a pink license plate frame and North Carolina plates. Those observations gave detectives a starting point as they tried to identify the vehicle that had left the scene and locate the person who had been driving it.

Investigators then turned to street cameras and Flock license plate-reader records. Police traced a 2003 Honda Accord matching the description given by witnesses, according to the affidavit and local reports. Records showed the car was registered to McKnight, and a witness later identified a photograph of the vehicle as matching the sedan seen leaving Tint World. The combination of witness descriptions and camera information shifted the investigation from the Monroe Road crime scene toward Union County, southeast of Charlotte.

Union County sheriff’s deputies eventually found the Honda near Wilkerson Drive in Indian Trail. McKnight was in the front passenger seat when deputies approached, according to the court documents summarized by Law&Crime and WSOC-TV. Authorities said McKnight addressed deputies and stated, “I’m the one you’re looking for.” Investigators also spoke with the person driving the Honda. That driver told detectives McKnight had called and said she needed to turn herself in because she had done something bad, according to the affidavit. Police said they also observed blood evidence on the inside and outside of the Honda.

McKnight was taken to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning by homicide detectives. During the interview, investigators said, she acknowledged that Christian was the father of her child and confirmed that she had been at Tint World. She also acknowledged that the encounter became physical. Police wrote that McKnight said that at one point Christian was on top of her and that “the next moment he was on the ground.” The statement, as reported from the affidavit, did not provide a full account of the fatal injury or establish how a court might ultimately evaluate the confrontation.

Investigators also said McKnight told them she and Christian frequently argued about child support. That detail appears in the affidavit as part of the history police said she provided during questioning. Authorities have not publicly established a broader motive in the reporting reviewed for this article, and the available records do not explain what immediately preceded McKnight’s arrival at Christian’s workplace. The distinction matters because the account released so far comes largely from witnesses, investigators and a probable cause document prepared during the early stage of a criminal case.

Christian’s death also left employees and others at the Monroe Road business dealing with the aftermath of a homicide outside the workplace. A Tint World representative told Queen City News that the company’s priority was the safety and well-being of its customers, employees and community. The company said it was cooperating with investigators and referred further questions about the incident to law enforcement. The statement did not offer additional details about Christian, the dispute or what employees may have witnessed.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police identified Christian as the victim and McKnight as the suspect as the homicide investigation continued. A local report summarizing the department’s announcement said Christian’s next of kin had been notified and that the investigation remained ongoing. Police credited assistance from the department’s Real Time Crime Center and aviation unit, along with the Union County Sheriff’s Office and Monroe Police Department, in locating and arresting McKnight. The reviewed reports did not identify any additional person as a suspect in Christian’s death.

For now, McKnight is booked into Mecklenburg County custody after detectives completed their initial interview. WBTV reported that records showed she was denied bond, while WSOC-TV reported that she was being held without bond after the murder charge. The publicly available reporting reviewed for this article did not provide a later court disposition, trial date or final adjudication. The case therefore remains an allegation arising from an active homicide investigation and court process, with the witness statements and physical evidence described by police subject to further testing and review.
