Chipotle’s Burrito Bowls: Unveiling the Shocking Weight Discrepancies in New York City Locations

New York City, NY – A recent study conducted by Wells Fargo analyst Zachary Fadem and his team delved into the controversial issue of portion sizes at Chipotle Mexican Grill. The study involved purchasing and weighing 75 burrito bowls from eight different Chipotle locations in New York City. The analysts discovered a significant variation in the weight of the burrito bowls, with inconsistencies observed between orders placed digitally and in person.

According to the analysts, the median weight of the bowls ordered online and in person was relatively similar. However, the weight discrepancies were considerable within each category. The heaviest in-person ordered bowl weighed 47% more than the lightest, while the weight gap was even wider for digital orders, with the heaviest bowl weighing 87% more than the lightest. The smallest burrito bowl weighed only 13.8 ounces, slightly more than an average can of soda.

Interestingly, the study also identified a particular Chipotle location in New York City where many of the lightest bowls originated. All of these light bowls were digital orders, raising concerns about order consistency at the chain.

The analysis comes in the midst of criticisms on social media regarding the portion sizes at Chipotle. While rumors circulated about smaller portion sizes, Chipotle denied these claims. The controversy sparked a viral trend on social media, particularly on platforms like TikTok.

Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol addressed the rumors by emphasizing that portion sizes had not decreased. He mentioned that customers could request a “look” to receive larger portions. Former CEO Steve Ells echoed these sentiments, reaffirming that the portion sizes at Chipotle have remained consistent and generous.

Despite the portion size controversy, Chipotle’s foot traffic has been steadily increasing, with Wells Fargo reporting that it is at the highest level in 10 quarters. The findings have boosted optimism about the company’s performance, despite the ongoing debate surrounding portion sizes. Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Laurie Schalow explained that variability in bowl sizes is normal due to the customizable nature of Chipotle’s menu offerings.

In conclusion, while the study shed light on the inconsistencies in Chipotle’s burrito bowl weights, it also highlighted the chain’s resilience in the face of controversy. The findings underscore the importance of transparency and consistency in the fast-casual dining industry.
