Clemson, South Carolina — Clemson University is reportedly close to securing a multiyear deal with Chad Morris to return as the team’s offensive coordinator. Sources indicate that the agreement is set to be finalized after a review by the board of trustees on Monday.
Morris previously held the playcalling duties for the Tigers from 2011 to 2014, during which he developed the framework for a potent offense that contributed to Clemson’s national championships in 2016 and 2018. His influence extended beyond strategy; he played a crucial role in recruiting standout quarterback Deshaun Watson to the program.
The Tigers’ offensive performance has declined notably in recent years, marked by struggles to find elite quarterback talent. In 2025, Clemson faced the lowest point in its offensive results, finishing 11th in scoring within the Atlantic Coast Conference and ranking 10th in Total QBR. A disappointing season culminated in a 22-10 defeat against Penn State at the Pinstripe Bowl, resulting in a lackluster 7-6 record—Clemson’s worst finish since 2010. Consequently, offensive coordinator Garrett Riley was dismissed.
Before his time at Clemson, Morris revitalized an underperforming SMU team, transforming a 1-11 squad into a 7-5 program in just one season. He later accepted the head coach position at Arkansas, but his tenure there was less successful, as he managed only four wins against 18 losses over two seasons. Morris returned to the offensive coordinator role at Auburn for one year in 2020 before serving in advisory capacities at South Florida and, more recently, at Virginia, where he worked alongside his son, Chandler, who was the Cavaliers’ starting quarterback.
Morris’ potential return was first reported by local media, and while reactions among fans and analysts are mixed, many express optimism about his ability to revitalize the Tigers’ struggling offense. His familiarity with the program and previous successes could offer the spark Clemson needs to reclaim its position among college football’s elite.
As the board meeting approaches, excitement builds around the prospect of Morris rejoining a program that has been seeking stability and effectiveness in its offensive strategy. If finalized, his appointment could signal a new chapter for Clemson football as it aims to rebound from a disappointing season.
