Miami Beach, Fla. — The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating a tragic vessel collision that occurred Monday morning near Hibiscus Island, which resulted in the deaths of two young children. The incident involved a barge striking a sailboat carrying participants from a summer sailing program.
Two children, aged 7 and 13, lost their lives in the accident, while two others, aged 8 and 11, remain in critical condition, according to officials. A 12-year-old girl and a 19-year-old woman were rescued from the water following the crash, which took place around 11 a.m. in Biscayne Bay.
The sailboat, which was occupied by five children and an adult counselor, sank immediately after being struck by the barge. Witnesses reported that all six individuals were thrown overboard, with some allegedly becoming trapped beneath the larger vessel.
First responders, including teams from Miami Beach Fire Rescue and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, arrived quickly on the scene to conduct rescue operations. Additional support came from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Coast Guard, which established a 250-yard safety zone around the accident site.
Three victims were initially transported to Miami-Dade Marina, while the two deceased children were later pronounced dead at Jackson Memorial Hospital. The two remaining children are still being treated for serious injuries but remain hospitalized.
The Miami Yacht Club has confirmed that the children involved were part of the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation, a summer program designed to teach children sailing skills. A representative from the club expressed condolences and stated that they are committed to cooperating fully with authorities as the investigation unfolds. “Our priority is the safety and well-being of everyone involved,” the club said in a statement.
Investigators continue to gather information regarding the collision’s circumstances, which has shaken the community and raised concerns about water safety. The Coast Guard is expected to release further details as their inquiry progresses, emphasizing the importance of understanding the factors that led to this devastating incident.
As the community mourns the loss of the two children, parents and guardians are reminded of the risks associated with maritime activities. The continuation of sailing programs will likely involve discussions on safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
