Competition: Tesla vs. BYD – Who’s Winning the Electric Vehicle Race in China?

Hong Kong – Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers BYD and Tesla are engaged in a fierce competition for dominance in the global market. The Chinese company, founded by Wang Chuanfu in 1995, has risen to become the world’s leading EV manufacturer, surpassing Tesla in global sales in 2023. However, Tesla quickly regained its position in the first quarter of 2024.

BYD’s market capitalization of $81 billion places it among the top 10 automakers worldwide, although it still lags behind Tesla, Toyota, and Stellantis. Despite this, BYD has overtaken BMW and Ford and is in close pursuit of Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari in sales.

In 2023, Tesla outsold BYD by approximately 230,000 cars, with the gap narrowing from previous years. BYD achieved a significant milestone by selling more battery electric vehicles (BEVs) globally than Tesla in the last quarter of 2023.

However, in early 2024, BYD’s sales took a hit, selling only 300,114 BEVs in the first quarter compared to 525,409 in the previous quarter. This decline allowed Tesla to reclaim its leading position in sales, despite experiencing a decrease in sales volume.

Both companies are expanding beyond their home markets, with Tesla’s main export hub in Shanghai delivering 947,000 cars in the previous year. BYD, on the other hand, does not sell cars in the United States but operates a bus manufacturing plant in California.

The EV market is experiencing rapid growth globally, with 13.6 million EVs sold in 2023, a 30% increase from the previous year. BYD sold approximately 3 million electric cars, including hybrids, in 2023, while Tesla, focusing solely on BEVs, delivered 1.8 million vehicles worldwide.

Tesla’s shares have seen a 29% decrease this year, contrasting with BYD stock, which has dropped by nearly 6%. The competition between these two EV giants continues to intensify, especially in key markets such as China, where both companies are investing heavily to secure a larger market share.
