Pittsburgh, Pa. — T.J. Watt will not be holding out this summer after securing a significant three-year contract extension with the Steelers. The deal positions him as the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, underscoring his enormous value to the franchise.
Reports indicate that the contract is valued at $123 million, with an impressive $108 million guaranteed at signing. This new agreement elevates Watt’s average annual salary to $41 million, surpassing the previous mark of $40 million set by Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns and eclipsing Ja’Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Watt, who turned 30 this year, took to social media to suggest his excitement about the new contract. As the 30th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, he has quickly established himself as one of the most dominant defensive players in the league.
The linebacker has led the NFL in sacks three times, with his most recent title coming in the 2023 season when he racked up 19 sacks. Notably, in 2021, he tied Michael Strahan’s single-season record of 22.5 sacks, earning his first Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year award that year in the process.
In his most recent 2024 season, Watt demonstrated his elite skills by registering 11.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, and 27 quarterback hits, along with a league-best six forced fumbles over 17 games. His performance consistently illustrates his critical role in the Steelers’ defensive strategy.
Before the contract extension, there was speculation about the possibility of the Steelers exploring Watt’s trade value. However, with both parties successfully negotiating a deal, it’s clear there will not be a parting of ways before the 2025 season.
This extension not only cements Watt’s place within the organization but also signals Pittsburgh’s commitment to maintaining a robust defense as they look ahead to future seasons. Fans and analysts alike will be closely watching how Watt continues to perform as he takes on this new financial milestone during the upcoming seasons.
