PALEMBANG, Indonesia – A woman in Palembang, Indonesia, has been sentenced to two years in prison for sharing a TikTok video of herself eating pork, which is strictly forbidden in Islam. Lina Lutfiawati, also known as Lina Mukherjee, filmed herself reciting an Islamic phrase before consuming crispy pork skin in Bali, Indonesia. The 33-year-old, who identifies as Muslim, has over 2 million followers on TikTok.
According to BBC, Mukherjee claimed that she tried pork out of curiosity while traveling in Bali. Although Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, most of the population in Bali practices Hinduism. In the video, Mukherjee can be heard saying “Bismillah,” which translates to “in the name of God” in Arabic.
This week, a court in Palembang sentenced Lina Mukherjee to two years in prison and fined her $16,269.22 for “spreading information aimed at inciting hatred against religious individuals and specific groups.” If she fails to pay the fine, her jail term could be extended by three months. Mukherjee was reported to the authorities in March and charged in May.
Conservative groups, including the Indonesian Ulema Council, condemned her actions, labeling the video as blasphemous. Mukherjee’s case adds to a series of blasphemy trials seen in Indonesia. In 2017, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, Jakarta’s former Christian governor, was sentenced to nearly two years in prison on controversial blasphemy charges, after allegedly insulting Islam during his re-election campaign.
It is important to note that Indonesia’s population is predominantly Muslim, and the country places significant emphasis on respecting religious sensitivities. The sharing of content that is perceived to be disrespectful or blasphemous is met with severe consequences under Indonesian law.
Eating pork is forbidden in Islam, and this case serves as a reminder that social media influencers should exercise caution and cultural sensitivity when creating and sharing content.
