Detroit, Mich. — General Motors has announced a recall of more than 23,000 Chevrolet Corvettes due to a potentially dangerous fuel leak issue. This decision, prompted by multiple reports of fire incidents associated with the vehicles, was confirmed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall predominantly affects Corvette models manufactured between 2023 and 2026. Investigations by GM revealed that during refueling, an excess of fuel could spill into the vehicle’s fuel-filler pocket and possibly leak onto a hot surface or ignition source, making it a significant fire risk.
In particular, the NHTSA reported that Corvettes equipped with a left-side radiator and fan combination are particularly vulnerable. If the refueling hose fails to shut off automatically, fuel can accumulate, and under certain conditions, an operational cooling fan may draw the leaked gasoline into the engine compartment, increasing the likelihood of ignition.
Four incidents related to this issue have been documented in GM’s investigation. In two cases, evidence pointed to malfunctioning filling station pumps as contributing factors to the fuel spills. The company emphasized that only a small fraction—approximately 0.1%—of the recalled vehicles are believed to have been impacted by this problem.
To address the issue, GM plans to install a protective shield in affected vehicles to help direct any spilled fuel away from sensitive areas. The automaker has stressed its commitment to safety, noting the company’s priority is the well-being of its customers.
“As we work through this matter, customer safety is our top concern,” a company spokesperson said. “We aim to resolve this quickly for those affected.”
Owners of recalled vehicles will be notified directly by GM, and dealerships will perform the necessary repairs free of charge. This proactive measure reflects the automaker’s dedication to mitigating risks associated with its vehicles.
As the automotive industry continues to emphasize safety and reliability, GM’s current recall underscores the complexities manufacturers face in balancing performance with responsible design. The Corvette, often celebrated for its speed and engineering, now requires careful attention to ensure that its legacy remains untarnished by safety concerns.
